The term "unicorn" was originally coined in 2013 by Aileen Lee, the founder of Cowboy Ventures. In the venture capital industry, a unicorn refers to any tech startup company that reaches a market value of one billion dollars as determined by private or public investment. Unicorn companies are usually characterized by scarcity – not only is the trajectory of their business rare but their business model and technology are also one of a kind, making them particularly attractive to investors in the capital market.

It takes an average of seven years for unicorn companies in China to reach this status. In this short period of time, these companies have to grow rapidly and realize commercial monetization in a fast-paced, frequently evolving market environment. The key to long-term success is to develop new technologies and adapt the business model in a way that transforms these innovations into commercial value with lasting and stable profitability. Commercial monetization involves various aspects of top-line growth, such as innovative charging models, customer willingness to pay, user retention, and stickiness.
