How Middle East businesses can navigate uncertainty and drive growth

For businesses across the Middle East, uncertainty is making commercial planning increasingly difficult. Geopolitical disruption, changing market conditions, cost pressures, and shifts in consumer demand are challenging traditional assumptions about where and how growth will come from. Travel businesses are particularly exposed, as uncertainty is contributing to delayed booking decisions, changing travel patterns, and greater demand for flexibility.

These pressures are also changing the questions business leaders are asking. In our latest video, Chris Bergman, Partner in the Consumer practice in our Dubai office, shares how clients across the region are shifting from “How do we grow faster?” to a more pressing question: “How do we continue to grow?”

Answering that question requires businesses to protect current performance while building the resilience and agility needed for what comes next.

Key takeaways from the video

1. Focus on the right priorities

In a volatile environment, businesses need to balance short-term performance with the ability to adapt as market dynamics evolve.

  • Protect profitability: Focus on cost measures, pricing efficiency, and margin protection as demand and operating conditions fluctuate.
  • Build greater agility: Strengthen the capabilities and decision-making processes needed to react quickly to changing conditions and act as opportunities emerge.

2. Take decisive commercial action

Uncertainty makes reactive decision-making increasingly risky. Businesses need clearer scenarios, stronger pricing discipline, and a sharper focus on existing customers.

  • Move from single to multi-scenario planning: Businesses should develop at least three potential scenarios, supported by clear triggers and commercial playbooks that determine when and how to respond.
  • Fix pricing before the market fixes it for you: Pricing based on last year's demand and cost assumptions may no longer reflect today's economic environment. Businesses need to reassess pricing to protect profitability.
  • Strengthen existing customer relationships: Retention can provide an important foundation for continued growth during periods of uncertainty. Businesses should focus on deepening existing relationships and protecting customer value.

3. Respond to changing travel behavior

For travel businesses in particular, demand is not disappearing, but how consumers plan, book, and value travel is changing. These shifts are creating new expectations around flexibility, proximity, and value.

  • Booking windows are shrinking: Travelers are waiting longer before committing, therefore making flexible fares and booking conditions more important.
  • Travelers are staying closer to home: Domestic and regional travel can become more attractive when consumers want greater flexibility and the ability to change plans quickly.
  • Consumers are becoming more value-conscious: This does not necessarily mean spending less. Travelers are becoming more selective about what they are willing to pay for and placing greater value on distinctive experiences and personalization.

The ability to adapt quickly is a major competitive advantage for businesses in the Middle East. Protecting profitability, preparing for multiple outcomes, and understanding how customer behavior is evolving can help organizations build the agility needed to continue growing.
